From 1958 to 2008, there were only 7 years that the Academy did not nominate at least one of the following actors for the Best Actor Award:
- Paul Newman
- Jack Lemmon
- Peter O'Toole
- Albert Finney
- Dustin Hoffman
- Jack Nicholson
- Robert De Niro
- Al Pacino
- Daniel Day-Lewis
- Sean Penn
- Tom Hanks
65, 66, 71, 77, 96, 04 and 05
If these 11 actors were a part of some super-secret guild (let's call it the Omnipotent Actor's Guild), that means that the OAG was represented at least once yearly 86% of the time in a span of 50 years.
It means that for half a century, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to nominate at least one person from the OAG 86% of the time. It means that all of the other hypothetical guilds out there, and there could be thousands of them, are being short-changed in terms of representation.
There is an obvious bias in the A.M.P.A.S.
Either that or I'm looking at an arbitrary sample.
