Brainlapse

I swear that my brain is messing with me. This was the third time this week...Let me back up for a moment to provide context.

Earlier this week, I couldn't find my backpack. Since I planned to go to sleep soon, I went downstairs to look for it. It was fairly late, a few hours after midnight, so all the lights were off. As I head down the stairs, lights still off, a thought struck me. This was my house. If I can find my way through foreign cities by glancing at a map for 5 minutes, I can certainly roam around my house in the dark to look for my backpack.

I should explain by saying that I do this more often than I'd like to admit. It always starts with a seemingly mundane thought.

"Hey, I wonder how blind people would walk in my house?" or "I bet me that I can't get a cup water in the dark," or "Let's be stupid and not use lights, Andrew," followed by, "Okay, Andrew!"

So my blind search for my backpack was not without precedent. I walk down the stairs without any problem, and I turn the corner into the living room. I remember that I dropped my backpack in front of my couch before dinner, so I cross the room confidently toward the couch.

The furniture in my living room can be a bit tricky. The main obstacle is the coffee table in the middle of it. This wooden table, though, is propped up on wheels, so unless we're entertaining guests, it is sometimes rolled to the side. I was 70% sure that was its position when I walked into the living room. Thankfully, I was right, and I did not jam my toes into what would have been very solid mahogany.

The second interesting fact about the furnishings is that the couches match the coffee table. This may not sound unreasonable, but we actually bought them separately. The point is, the couches are made of wood, and the only thing comfortable about them are their three cushions. Otherwise, they can be very unforgiving. They look like this, except with a bit less tacky design on the pillows:

Anyway, my backpack, as I recall, was on the ground on the far right of the couch. I walk across the living room and search with my hands. I then get the bright idea (get it?) to search with my leg. I kick exactly where my backpack should have been. I say "should have been" because my backpack was not there. Instead, the wooden bottom of the couch happily greeted my shin.

Angrily realizing my backpack was not downstairs, I walk up again, and lo and behold, my backpack was chillin' next to my computer. Vexed, I went to sleep, feeling like the fool I was. This was the first incident.

The second incident occurred a few days later. I won't go into as much detail because I think I got way overzealous with the last one. Short story short: I couldn't find my phone upstairs so I went downstairs. It wasn't there and so I came back upstairs and my dumbass brain remembers that I started charging it on my bed already. It was another waste of a downstairs trip in the dark, less painful, but definitely equally as stupid.

At this point, I'm rather peeved at myself for not remembering, but then again, I can do nothing about it. It could have been worse, right? I could have lost those things altogether.

Tonight, though, was the final straw. Right now it's 6AM. About 15 minutes ago, I decided it was well past my bed time, so I decided to sleep. However, I couldn't find my phone again. Learning from my previous mistakes, I decided to search my room thoroughly. I spent five minutes rummaging through my pockets, my laundry and my bedsheets to no avail. It had to be in my room. The history of my incompetence told me so. Frustrated, I began my trek down the stairs.

This time, I turn on all the lights. I was in no mood to challenge myself for no reason. I head into the kitchen and my motherfucking phone was sitting right on the fucking table like the smug little fuckface it is.

The moral of this vulgar story is my brain is a worthless piece of shit that has the memory and retention capacity of a rock.

Goodbye

There are so many
beautiful pictures
because there are so many
beautiful things.

Like the rain on a windowsill,
while the sun still peeks behind
grey blanket-clouds,

or the movement
of a cat's yawn
before it stretches,

or the deep inhalation
as you're on the precipice
of something great,

or stumbling
over a small rock
and catching my balance again,
my sheepish smile screams for
a forgiveness that you've already given
by your chuckle,

or a tightening of my arms
around a branch
that may or may not
support the weight
I've gained this last year,

or my toes
and how they melt
into the sand
and melt out again,

or thinking there's silence
when really
a brook whispers softly nearby
and realizing it's been
speaking to you the whole time,

or a candid reunion
from a long-ago lover
who listens intently
and laughs loudly
like time told her to,

or hair freckled with snow
before it's freckled with droplets,

or the contentedness
of a dog to share a bed with you
and your book,

or the turning-off of a light
that waits to be alive again,

or the feeling of cold water
on a cold day
when the coldness of my friends
could not refresh me enough,

or a savory sirloin
on an empty stomach
at midnight,

or unneeded candlelight
at a modern dinner
with only the glow of company
for vision,

or the moment of understanding
of anything,

or the moment of happiness
even when I don't understand,

or silence,
real silence,

or sometimes, being alone,

or a book
that still smells like our last goodbye.

Dihydrated Rium

Beneath the once-turquoise pebbles
are the other pebbles,
more real and as much a part of the
aquarium as water should be.
A stalk of dry bamboo leans against
a large rock
and the transparent wall.

I look into my own eyes
and through them.
I blink and see them swimming.
Kermit
and Miss Piggy
I've named them,
their webbed feet paddling
in what I can only assume
is content.
The consensus between us is reached:
I feed and they teach
me how to be ambivalent.
Just two, just two.
My palm rests above the lid,
fingers gripping the top,
clutching their see-through home
in the clasp that usually feeds them.
They gasp and scurry in the water
as much as you can scurry or gasp in water,
and are as confused
as you can be confused in water -
confusing
water.
I blink,
and my own eyes stare through themselves again.

Turquoise fades to grey,
and dust coats the lid
that covers only rocks
and a desiccated bamboo stalk.

Eye of the Beholder

I hate it when I dress up, and people don't see how handsome I look. It's not that I want people to acknowledge my beauty, because obviously, I can acknowledge it myself plenty. Rather, it's me wanting others' approval. I get frustrated with myself when I stay dressed for longer than I have to. Right now, for example, I want to go to the gym (okay, okay, I need to go to the gym), but I also want to stay dressed because, goddammit, I'm gorgeous in these clothes.

Wtf me?

Borrowed Light

The room is dimly lit,
the only sources of
light are the tv
and the moon through the windows,
rays of borrowed brightness.
Sam and Diane are arguing again,
and next up
I get to relive someone else's
wonder years.
Chachi and the Fonz
are playing it cool,
and the ghost of Don Knotts
stares across the room,
only a few inches,
wide-eyed.
I get to laugh at them,
and sometimes with them,
and sometimes alone,
and then I sleep.

I dreamt of you again again,
but this time it was different,
like my soul had given up,
even when my heart
and indeed my head
say no.
We were friends, still,
and we laughed as only friends can do,
without the hope of something more.
Like a tv marathon,
our laughter lasts a night.
And in my dream,
I have already let you go.

All the dreams I've had of you,
were incandescent in their joy,
but incandescent dreams
are only borrowed light.
In waking, each time,
I was wrought with sadness.
But this time,
I never even had a chance at joy.
Even in dreams, you're gone.
I hate to be so straightforward,
but writing this is as much discovery
as it is poetry.
I hate to be so straightforward
because I want it to sound pretty,
but I guess it sounds pretty as it is.

I love you,
and please don't go
because even in my dreams now,
you're gone.
And I am left with nothing
but the borrowed memory
of what could have been.
